Volvo Ocean Race Boston Stopover

The seven open 70s still competing in the volvo ocean race left for Galway (Ireland) today, ending their almost three week stopover in Boston. The race is a highly competitive nine month race in some of the most advanced boats in the world. Currently, Ericsson 4 is leading overall, but Telefonica Blue is winning the current leg.

I went down to watch the boats leave and also got to see a pair of Moths (one of them being Anna Tunicliffe - gold medal laser sailer) sailing around. Moths are cool because the whole hull lifts out of the water, and the boat is sailed on a hydrofoil, which means there's hardly any drag. Check out this clip of a moth sailing.

I shot all these photos from shore, would have loved to be on a press/spectator boat but no such luck. You really don't realize how fast the open 70s go until you actually see them in person. Click on the photos to see a bit larger versions. Enjoy.

RPI Autocross

It's been quite a while since I've taken any photos, and the weather is getting nice so I went out to see the RPI sportscar club run laps around a course they set up in the parking lot behind North Hall. It was pretty exciting to watch, and there were a bunch of nice cars there. I only took a few pictures - it was just so bright out, and here they are.

I've got another very busy week of school and then summer. This past semester has been really busy, and I lost a lot of photos when my hard drive crashed but I'm going to try and get some more pictures up in the next week or two.

Duxbury - Shipyard and the Newport boat show

I went home this past weekend to see some people and go to the Newport boat show. I got out saturday evening to take some photos (below). I went to shipyard because I didn't have much time and wanted to go somewhere I haven't shot before. I got a couple shots but I was too late to get any real nice light.

The boat show was awesome - the forecast was for rain but we arrived at about 11:00, when the rain stopped. We got to see all of the boats in the water, from small sailboats like the Dyer dinghy to much more expensive boats including the $2.4 million motorboat M2-60 and the Friendship 40 - my favorite in the show. After the boat show we got to walk the docks of the Newport Shipyard. There were a bunch of very nice boats in the water such as Speedboat/Virgin Money and a dozen or so huge custom wooden cruising yachts. After this, I had to make a stop at Onne van der Waal's gallery located right on the waterfront. He is an incredible photographer and specializes in sailing photography. I recommend checking out his gallery in person, but if you can't do that his website will suffice. Newport is a great day trip if you're interested in sailing. Just walking down the docks at the Shipyard is an experience.

I'm currently working on changing my website to be a bit easier to navigate and update. I hope to have that updated by tomorrow.

Edit: I have updated my main site. Changes include an easier to navigate galleries section with more content, and a larger button for the blog, as well as a few minor changes.

An update on what I'm doing

So I've been back at college for a week now, and everything is going pretty smoothly. Unfortunately, we don't yet have any internet/TV set up at our apartment yet - that won't be done until as late as Thursday this week, so I am only able to access email and the internet from campus, which is a pain.

I am going to be doing a DBMS wrap up blog post with 10 of my favorite pictures from the year. It's going to be tough narrowing down the 300 or so photos that I like to only 10.

To parents of DBMS students - I have a LOT of photos from this summer (I submitted around 200 or so to the slideshow, but I have at least a thousand photos total). If you want to see photos of your kid and possibly order prints, just send me an email. I have actually categorized all the photos by student, which means that if you email me their name I can host a private gallery of their images for you to look through (categorization is only for the kids I know/have taught). Alternatively, you can just look through the photos I took this summer (these are the ones I submitted to the slideshow).

I am currently working on an update to my site to make it easier to view galleries and order prints, as well as for me to update. Currently its a bit tough to navigate and was really just created to showcase some of my images as a sort of online portfolio. Now I'm trying to transition into more of a print ordering and gallery based site which will be easier for me to update and categorize.

I haven't really been doing any major editing of my photos lately, but I did used to be pretty into graphics design and photoshop. I was playing around with a windsurfing photo the other day and am pretty pleased with how my edit came out (see the end of the post - you can click to enlarge them).

I really enjoy sailing photography and hopefully will get the opportunity to do more of it next summer. If I could find a boat to shoot from I'd be interested in doing a few regattas and hopefully some big boat racing next year.

I shot this game for the school newspaper. I haven't shot field hockey before, and I don't know that much about the game so it was a learning experience. RPI won 1-0.

I got a new lens this last week, so I went to the beach on a fairly windy day to test it out. I also brought my cover and a pair of board shorts this time, so I was actually shooting from about 30ft in the water (it was low tide). I did take a lot of photos, and here are some of my favorites.

Here are some photos from the weekly race series at DBMS. It was ripping out - the average was in the low to mid 20s but there were gusts past 30. Still, the opti race team went out and sailed. Only a few actually made it through the day without flipping or having to go in, which was quite a feat considering the conditions.

About a week ago, a storm rolled through Duxbury bay. Some of the clouds were really interesting, especially the ones that initially formed near Bluefish. Unfortunately I was on the water at this point, but it sure was a sight to see. David Grossman got a shot of the front rolling in, check it out.

Here are a couple shots I got after the front had passed and we were in the storm.

Pretty windy day, didn't have enough time or motivation to windsurf myself so I went to take a few photos. This was kind of a test run as I haven't really done much of this type of photography yet, but I'd like to get a longer lens and get farther into the water. Anyway, here are some of the better shots I got.

Kenneth wanted me to take some photos of the bike he rebuilt, so we went out towards powder point and the beach and got some shots. It's a fixed gear bike that is built for use by primarily bike messengers.

Bay Farm

Bay Farm consists of 80 acres of public land that is free for public use. It's a pretty scenic place, and I remember coming here when we were just moving to Duxbury. It also offers a pretty nice view of the bay, as well as some small trails that lead to the water or through the woods.

Opening of the Bay

Each year on Memorial Day weekend, the Duxbury Bay Maritime School hosts the "Opening of the Bay". It's a two day event that includes a party, various raffles, games, and auctions, and a tall ship that comes into the harbor and gives tours. This year the ship was "Friendship" from Salem, MA. I was helping guide the boat in through the harbor on Friday, and back out of the harbor today. It was quite a process and a lot of people were there to watch and help out. Duxbury Bay is very shallow all over, so the boat had to stay in the middle of the channel otherwise it could run aground. Here are some pictures of the ship exiting the harbor, and the people helping out.

Bluefish River

This is the Bluefish River, another location that is quite close to home. Today was a weird day as far as the weather was concerned. There were patches of heavy rain, light rain, bright sunshine, and the clouds were very interesting looking throughout the day. Right after I took the last photo, the sky opened up so I'm glad I was able to get a few photos in before the hard rain.

I especially like the third photo, which looks a lot better in a larger size.

I'm finally back at home. I've been pretty busy the past few weeks and haven't gotten a chance to go out and shoot. I've been working my summer job and also trying to get a second job assisting a local photographer. Well anyway, I went out this morning and took a few photos. The first two are taken at a cove a few minutes from my house. It's a really nice area. The rest of them are from the beach and the bridge that goes to the outer beach. Enjoy.

I've wanted to experiment with car headlights and night shots but never really got around to doing it. Well, I went a few blocks away from my house, to where RT-7 enters Troy, and set up my gear there. I like the shots, but I'm interested in finding a new place to shoot from.

I went downtown and took some photos last thursday (just got around to processing them now because I was sailing all weekend). The photos are actually very similar to the ones I took last year around this time. I like just walking around and taking photographs, but it is one area where I have not had much experience and I do have a bit of trouble finding things to photograph. I was looking for some more abstract things in this outing, and I got some photos I'm happy with. REACH - Study Abroad Program

Well, there was a presidential colloquy announcing RPI's creation of a new study abroad program, REACH (which stands for Rensselaer Engineering Education Across Cultural Horizons). The two partner universities at the moment are the Technical University of Denmark and Nanyang Technological University, located in Lyngby and Singapore respectively. Although I am not interested in either of these schools, largely because I don't speak the languages, I am very interested in studying abroad and it is nice to see RPI making an effort to stimulate interest in this. I was covering this event for the Poly.

Red Carpet Affair

I took some photos for the school newspaper last night. This event was held to announce the winners of the student government elections (congratulations to all who got a position). There wasn't very much light in there and I wasn't using flash, so it was a bit tough but I got some photos I'm pleased with.

Redesigned my site

Hey everyone. I didn't get to do any photography this weekend, but I did get around to redesigning my website. This is something that I've wanted to do for a while but I haven't had the time to devote to it, with schoolwork and all going on. Anyway, I got around to it this weekend and I'm pretty pleased with how it came out. The weather forecasted isn't all that great for the next few days... freezing rain, thunderstorms, and high winds! I do hope I get one nice day because I've found a spot in Albany I'm interested in checking out. I've got a lot of stuff going on right now. I'm trying to figure out where I really want to be heading with my major and what kind of job I would like to have. I am also trying to fit in a semester abroad in the spring of 2009. If everything comes together as I hope it does, I might be in Australia that semester. I'm thinking I probably want to do some form of environmental engineering when I get out of school - working on geothermal or wind power, or something involving the environment and reducing our impact.
